There were two Welsh and two Irish-trained successes at Ffos Las’s final flat meeting of the season, and a treble for Cieren Fallon, who is well on the way to losing his three pounds claim. The going was good, good to soft in places.
County Kilkenny trainer Andrew Hughes sent two runners across the Irish Sea today and the first of them, Rominintheglomin (16/1), took the 6f nursery. She made most of the running and had a length and a quarter to spare over Kitos at the line. She’d shown little form before this, her first run in a handicap. The northern-based apprentice Rowan Scott partnered her, giving him his second course winner from two rides.
Simon Crisford’s Night Colours (7/1) won the one mile race for two-year-olds quite impressively. She travelled smoothly into a share of the lead two out before being shaken up by Dane O’Neill. From there she quickly put daylight between herself and her rivals, coming in two and a half lengths ahead of the odds-on Hot Summer.
Mabo (8/1) has been running well this summer for Grace Harris and the drop to seven furlongs enabled him to record his first win since joining the stable. Rossa Ryan went for home a furlong and a half out and set up a clear lead, which the Irish raider Midnitemudcrabs could not bridge. There was a length and three quarters between them at the line.
A fillies handicap over a mile resulted in a win for Roger Teal’s Kyllachys Tale (11/4), her second of the season. Sweating up conspicuously didn’t stop her. She ran a close second from flag fall until passing the two pole, when Cieren Fallon urged her into the lead. The five-year-old mare ran on with determination to hold off Society Guest by a length and a quarter.
Another race for fillies, this time over 1m2f, ended in the second Irish-trained winner of the day who was making her debut in a handicap. Sarah Jessica (4/1), handled by the Welsh Grand National winning-Gavin Cromwell, was ridden confidently by Nicola Currie. She came from sixth of the six runners to take the lead a furlong and a half out, and won as if it wouldn’t be her last. Capriolette was the length and a half runner-up.
Blue Laureate’s record was only 1-18 before today’s 2m handicap, yet here he trotted up.
First-time cheekpieces probably helped, as did the presence of Cieren Fallon in the saddle. The jockey was hard at work some way out, but persistence paid off. Once he hit the front with over a furlong left, the 15/2 shot came right away for a seven length victory, with the rest well strung out. It could be that two miles is a minimum for him. Nuits St George came in second.
The last race was over 1m4f. The veteran trainer Dai Burchell took the spoils with Good Impression (18/1), who had run with promise at Goodwood last time out. Man of the moment Cieren Fallon sent him ahead two out, only to be challenged by Visor and Just Once at the furlong pole. He repelled that pair gamely to prevail by a head.
